But that's only instant if you've already created the index. Windows Search also uses the index Windows creates if indexing isn't turned off. It also indexes content, I believe.

I'm not pushing the MS solution here, just pointing out that they do provide usable ways to do these things.

The change journal is an interesting thing. There's a tool I sometimes use called SpaceSniffer. It logs the drive and displays a sort of bubble map like WinDirStat, but keeps it up to date using the change journal. You can apply filters like "c<1 day" and it will show just the files with creation dates less than a day old, changing in real time.
