Yes, it is frustrating to have all that width wasted.

Would it be a problem for anyone to have the behaviour change at different widths? I doubt there are any scripts out there that rely on it.

It could be confusing for someone accustomed to seeing file sizes with all commas because they normally run full width to have one comma vanish when they happen to run at a smaller size one day. They could make assumptions about the sizes of the files and dirs they're looking without realising they now have to look for the missing comma. It's not something you'd expect to happen.

I think this solution could be used more safely in conjunction with a warning colour where a comma is missing.
