I also used Norton Disk Editor but didn't "replace"
the first character with sigma as this means deleting
the file. I just renamed the illegal character to a
valid one. That has the advantage that you then have
access to the obscure file for further investigation.

BTW: Also the very old versions of NC could sometimes
rename such files and directories.
