That is true, however there is a difference between the two - and I think that's what actually caught my eye earlier...

When "masking", XTG appears to apply the [M]ask then check for line breaks, while ZTW does them in the reverse order.

Which amounts (in masked mode) to characters like 0x8A being translated into breaks by XTG, but not by ZTW.

Anyway, that clears the question for me.
I'll stop here and carefully avoid asking whether a formal definition of [M]asking exists ;-)
