I never have tried to do this because I am used to how Xtree/Ztree works.

It has always made sense and after 13+ years with it, it is how I (and thousands of others) think. And because it still works that way, many many other former Xtree users have adopted Ztree without hesitation. Have you read the forum Guess Book?:

And because the modifications, improvements, and additions have not broken the paradigm it has remained the best at what it does.
