Michael,
Since the early times (later versions of DOS), all operating systems use a kind of random strategy to distribute the empty space of hard drives and other devices like flash disks, etc.
The reason for those strategies lays on the fact that several of those devices are subject to wear and the common sense points into having a distribution of usage.
The algorithms are specially aggressive for flash memory because of the limited life of each cell on those devices.
Like the single horse chariot principle in design, the device made for enduring maximum usage should not have excessively strong or weak points.
There is a good chance that the file was not overridden by the new write.
But again, every use that you make of the computer, lowers your chances to find the file intact.
