Based on an answer above, how about this.

With the following structure:
> \program files \ web washer
> \program files \ windows media player
> \program files \ windows NT
> \program files \ windowsUpdate

> Now I would like to get to 'windows NT' using the treespec feature.

TAB wil finish ndows media player
Another tab replaces with ndows NT
Another tab replaces with ndowsUpdate
Another tab can
1) do nothing, as now
2) returns back to the first entry ndows media player
3) removes all expansion and displays simply what was typed -- my personal choice
Of course Shift-TAB will reverse the process.

This would be similar to the rename TAB feature in operation. Rename cycles thru capitalization, treespec cycles thru possible dirs
