Surely you perform a backup before a major installation.

If I really want to know in detail what files are changed, I mount the backup as a drive (DriveImage - now sadly Symantec'd) and do an All-Compare.

Normally I just use the Archive bit, as described by others (and discussed at great depth on a month ago).
