Check the Rename Mask Rules by John at:

You certainly need to use Rule No. 12. You'll find plenty of useful examples there.

I'd try this (just a guess):

0) Ctrl-Copy *.JPG to a backup directory and play there ;)

1) Alt-Sort by Name, Order(ascending)
2) Tag files P4230001.JPG to P4250120.JPG
3) Ctrl-Rename to: "?????:089:.*" (without the "'s),ENTER,
4) Repeat 2)
5) Ctrl-Rename to: "???3*.*" (without the "'s),ENTER,

Hope this helps,
AnĂbal

PD: I've tried this with few pictures from Patagonia and it worked ok. Hope it works with *dozens* of Australian pictures as well ;-)
