M$ does contribute to the frustration.

Prior to vc++ 5.0 we had the dll hell, which was resolved for years when msvcrt.dll was included with the OS. That changed with VC++ 2005, but at least you could use a runtime from shared side-by-side assemblies. VC++ 2010 expected the runtime to be loaded by the application. There seems to have been a very recent change of heart on this, but it doesn't inspire confidence.
