Once again spot on.
The IT people (I know that's you for many forum readers) have started to look at this situation to see if they can remove the cause from the network end (assuming that this is the cause) to see if they can deal with rogue COMMAND.COMs and do something about paths.

I will try pointless variations in batch file writing on the basis that sometimes something that shouldn't work does. In the meantime I want to thank everyone who's been thinking about this.
