Today - this works, even after rebooting. Weird.
Ztree starts up from the ZTWIN.BAT although it exits to the DOS screen rather than the desktop. The Edit still does not work though with the BAT file working now I might try some of the suggested variations again.

I'm starting to feel guilty about the length of this thread and, once again, thanks to everyone who's taken the time to think about this one.
