Ah - so it is a charming idiosyncrasy :-)

I think that this is inconsistent with its function during a replace. For example if I have a series of files called:
FILE1, FILE2, FILE3 ... FILE9, FILE10, FILE11

I might tag the first nine and apply the following *<0>?.*

This is a specific single character and correctly makes the files:
FILE01, FILE02 etc

I cannot see the virtue of " ... including zero characters" elsewhere. In what practical situation would it be useful? (I assume that there must be a reason.)
